To break the deadlock between the Philistines and the Kingdom of Israel, each sent a warrior into the valley to settle the dispute. This was a tradition in ancient warfare called single combat. The Philistines sent their mighty warrior Goliath who was a giant. Saul, who led the Kingdom of Israel, could only find one person who was willing to take on the mighty giant.
David walked up to Saul and said, “I’ll fight him.”
Saul said, “You can’t fight him. That’s ridiculous. You’re this kid. This is the mighty warrior.”
David replied, “No, no no, you don’t understand. I might only have this sling and rocks. But Goliath is so big. How could I possibly miss him?”
